[강하람의 과학칼럼3] 눈의 메카니즘 window to the world! Eyes!

In the world of neuroscience, there is a lot of parts of the body that involves neuroscience. There is ears, eyes, and more but today I am going to talk about the eyes that are the window to the world. Eyes are very important. If you lose them once it is impossible to bring back your visions. There are so many parts in the eyes but I will try to simplify parts in the eyes.

An eyeball is a beautiful machine that has a lot of parts that work together to let you see. The window to the eyeball is a thing called cornea. There is a lot of type of eye colors and they are depended on the Iris which is right behind the cornea. There is a black circle in the middle of the iris that is called the pupil that lets the light into our eyes. Iris has a muscle that is attached to the pupil that controls how much light gets in the eye. Pupil gets smaller when there is a lot of light and pupil get bigger when there is a less light.

After the light passes the iris and pupil the light passes through the lens. The lens is attached to a bunch of fiber that is connected to a ciliary muscle. The ciliary muscle changes the shape of the lens to let the eyes changes its focus. To see something very close the ciliary muscle make the lens thicker and to see something far the ciliary muscle stretches the lens to be thinner.

From the lens, we travel to the back of the eyeball which is called the retina. Retina has millions of light-sensitive cells that are called rods and cones. There are about 120 million rods and 7 millions of cones in each eye!

The difference between the rods and cones are the difference between black and white and color. Rods let us see black and white and colors of gray and help us see shapes. The cones are sensitive to red, green, and blue. Cones need more light than the rod to see.

Behind the retina, there is a nerve that is called optic nerve that changes the shape of what you have seen into an electrical signal and when it reaches to the brain the brain changes the signal into the thing that you have seen. That's the most basic way to explain the parts of the eyes. I will talk to you in the next collum. See you there.
